I forgot to mention that the Weiand 300-111 LS-1, LS-6 intake comes with two complete installation/gasket kits. Jeg's has the manifold for $580 and the gasket sets for another $32.00 each. Extrude Hone lists the modified manifold for $1100! Still $450 for any of us with an LS. -DT

When I started planning on the replacement engine for the Chevy II, I thought a supercharged or nitrous LS motor would be cool and started to gather parts for one. Eventually I built an old school small block to go with the old school car. At one point a 509 big block was very close to being in the car, but the nose heavy, very fast 427 big block in my friend Bill's 64 Chevy II, and having every bracket on hand from the original V-8, led me to build the car as it is. The next engine for this car will be different, but still a Gen-1 small block. I guess that it is easy to stick with what's familiar and that was the engine that went in. (Hard to beat one wire to the ignition and one to the electric choke!) -DT

There was an article in one of the magazines that got me thinking. They built and compared the refined manners and absurd power of a modified LS motor to a similar sized Gen-1 small block Chevy (might have been a 408 vs 406). The old style motor needed higher compression, a bigger solid roller cam, and bigger heads to approach the power level of a smooth running yet more powerful LS. The problem was that I'd have to collect all the parts for the LS and already had everything I needed for the Gen-1. -DT
